I find this to be offensive actually. Not rioting in the streets and burning things offensive but this rubs me the wrong way. There is something WRONG about this.(without being legalistic)

10 minutes from my house a church paid 300,000 dollars for a 150 foot cross….to express how close they desire to be to God. An atheist friend of mine told me, “Didn’t God screw up the last group of people who tried to do that?” It takes an Atheist to realize what following Jesus really means.

Agreed Matt. I think some churches have made their service a show, and that is all well and good if it gets people to listen to the message(and if the message delivered is consistent with God’s word). However, when your entire gameplan is to make it a “great show”….what happens when a better church comes along?

I made that mistake in my first couple years of youth ministry. I wanted to make sure youth group was “cool” for the kids. And it was, but ultimately, SOMETHING is going to be cooler. So if your major emphasis is “cool” or “entertaining”, and something that does that better comes along, people won’t stick around.

The emphasis needs to be on truth, because nobody does that better than Christ. The world can’t offer anything close to that, yet we cram it in as an afterthought all too often.

Interesting, I am planning on using Habakkuk as well this Wednesday in youth group!

Also, do you read anything by John Ortberg? His newest book is called “Faith & Doubt”, I just started reading it, but he starts by making pretty much the same point you did. You can’t believe something unless you’ve doubted it first.
